Create and Apply an Alternate Tax Table

Learn how to set up an alternate tax table in Bravo and apply it to specific customer profiles—for tax holidays, excise tax exemptions, and more.

Updated Date: July 16, 2025

Overview

Bravo lets you create alternate tax tables that bypass your store’s standard tax settings. These are applied directly to customer profiles—ideal when a customer qualifies for an excise tax exemption or when an item doesn’t qualify for tax-free status during a holiday event.

Alternate tax tables give you control over how tax is calculated for unique customer scenarios—without having to change your main tax table for everyone.

How Alternate Tax Tables Work

Alternate tax tables are configured at the Company level under the Taxes tab in System Configuration. Once configured, these alternate rules can be selectively applied to customer profiles.

This setup ensures that only specific customers—like tax-exempt buyers—get different tax treatment at checkout.

When to Use an Alternate Tax Table

Some common use cases include:

  • Tax-Free Holidays: Temporarily remove taxes for qualifying customers.

  • Excise Tax Exemptions: Remove excise tax for customers who qualify (like law enforcement or dealers).

Configure Tax Rate Components

You can now split your alternate tax rate into individual components for greater transparency and reporting.

6 (1)

  1. After selecting a Tax Nexus and checking Configure Alternate Tax Rule, look for the Rate Components section.

  2. Click the green + button to add a component.

  3. Enter a name and percentage for each component (e.g., State, County, Excise).

  4. Bravo will validate that the sum of all components equals your total tax rate.

    • Example: State (2.0%) + County (1.0%) + Excise (1.0%) = Total Tax Rate (4.0%)

This breakdown is especially useful if your customers are exempt from just one part of the total rate (like excise tax only).
