Reset Firmware Guide on ZD410, ZD420 or ZD620

Learn how to reset the firmware on your Zebra ZD410, ZD420, or ZD620 printer using either the Zebra Setup Utilities or a USB flash drive. This guide includes step-by-step instructions, screenshots, and necessary tools to restore factory defaults and reload firmware.

If a ZD410, Zd420, or ZD620 has a custom retailer display such as Sam’s or Pharmacy:

We need to run a few commands to the printer.   Firstly, locate the default .wml file within the printer itself by using the Zebra Setup Utility, selecting the printer you need to update, and using the “Direct Communication” option.

Copy and paste the following command in the upper box of the Direct Communication window and select “Send to Printer” at the top right. Occasionally you will have to hit Send to Printer again 2-3 times after 10 seconds each if you do not get a return line at the bottom.

! U1 getvar "display.root_wml"

On the bottom section of the application, you’ll see a return feed where it’s listed “Data received from the printer is shown in the Window below.”  Copy the return line which yours may be different in the picture and example given. In this case it is:

"z:index.wml"

You will then clear anything shown in the top box and paste the following command:

! U1 setvar "display.root_wml"

You will add a space after this and paste in your return line from earlier which was “z:index.wml” then select “Send to Printer.”  In our example, and most likely yours, it would look like this:

! U1 setvar "display.root_wml" "z:index.wml"

Finally, erase the top section again and run one last command which restarts the printer:

~JR

If done correctly, the printer should now function normally. If there is a region error, this can be ignored.

These commands should be supported by the following devices:

 iMZ220, iMZ320 • QLn220, QLn320, QLn420 • ZD220, ZD230 • ZD410, ZD420 • ZD500, ZD510 • ZD511 • ZD620 • ZD888 • ZQ120, ZQ220 • ZQ310, ZQ320 • ZQ510, ZQ520 • ZQ610, ZQ620

The command resources are found here:

If the above commands don’t resolve, you can further attempt the link below to delete the custom file and replace it with the built-in file, but this shouldn’t be required:

If the printer also remains on all the time when plugged in, that means the previous owner / retailer had a jumper connected inside the printer.  This is not something a customer will attempt and they will need their own tech to assist or they can simply return and purchase a different printer.
